DeTomaso Automobile Appearances
in Movies, Television & Video |
If you know of
a movie, TV show or video not listed below that has a DeTomaso appearance, please let me know about
it. I would also appreciate a scan of the video cover or movie poster and any
screen captures of the subject DeTomaso vehicles.

appearances of DeTomaso vehicles.
|
 |
Banzai Runner (1987)
The pre-eminent Pantera
movie! A yellow 1972 pre-L Pantera stars as the featured vehicle. This
is a low budget movie with sped-up race and chase scenes between the
Pantera and a Porsche 928. It ends in a fiery explosion of the Pantera.
Special effects and acting leave much to be desired. But, it features my
favorite car! My car! View the trailer below.

Bank Shot (1974)
(from
the DeTomaso Mail List)
There is a great looking
Pantera shown in various parts of the movie. A bank temporarily housed
in a mobile home while a new building is being built looks like an easy
target to break into. On the other hand, why not steal the whole bank,
and rob it in a safer location.

|
 |
Barefoot Executive (1971)
In a scene at the end of the
movie, Russell's character has made it big as a TV executive and is
shown driving up to see his girlfriend in a Mangusta. He may even make a
reference to the car in the script.
|
|

|
 |
Black Moon Rising (1986)
There's a brief shot of a
white L-model Pantera about half way through the movie. Thanks to Sean
Mundy for spotting this one on the Speed Channel on Friday, January 27.

Cannonball (1976) - aka "Carquake" (UK)
Click here to watch the Pantera chase scene. Definitely worth watching!
Carradine's character drives
a black TransAm, but there's a rather sinister German driver who drives
a yellow "L" model Pantera. There are several great scenes of this car
absolutely hauling butt across the country. In the aerial shot where the
Pantera explodes, it looks like a crude mock-up on some type of rolling
trailer. Also, it appears to only be moving at 30 or 40 mph, which is
WAY slower than the 160 mph speed indicated in the movie.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
Cannonball Run 2 (1984)
There's a Pantera at the
beginning of the race, parked, probably not even idling. The movie shows
a Ferrari guy listening to his engine with a stethoscope. I think the
Pantera guy has ear plugs. There's also a silver Pantera among the
waiting contestants just before the start, and it is one of the cars
shown punching their timecards and launching over a speed bump (?). It's
a brief Pantera moment.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
Challenge (1973)
Features a chase with a
DeTomaso Pantera chasing a Corvette. The speeds were ludicrously slow,
but there is one scene where the Pantera went off-road and wrecked one
of the rear wheels. This is right were the scene was cut. In subsequent
scenes the Pantera had it's spare on! Anyway, the Pantera is used in the
whole movie and the main chase lasts about 10 minutes. It even features
realistic sounds. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Devil Driver (mid 70's)
Roland Jaeckel came across
this one at a flea market. The movie was made in the seventies and is
about a Japanese stunt crew in the US. A lot of Panteras and Mangustas
throughout the film. Interestingly, all of the Mangustas have square
headlights. Although they didn't come that way, I understand it was a
popular conversion in the 70's. The movie is translated into
German, so Roland doesn't know the original title. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)
Click
image to view trailer.
Mary and Larry are two
lovers who, with Larry's ace mechanic, kidnap the daughter of a grocery
story owner, and make off with the ransom. They are chased over hill and
dale by the cops who employ everything from 426 Hemi's to helicopters to
stop Larry's Dodge Charger. There is a white Pantera in the background
in the garage scene when the redneck cop gets the interceptor with the
"unlimited" top end. It's on-screen for only about 2 seconds. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Dolemite (1975)
There are two brief scenes
of a yellow Pantera at about 52 minutes into it. Dolemite (1975) is a
cult classic (some call it it Blacksploitation, others call it trash)
starring Rudy Ray Moore as the pimp superhero out to wrong rights while
challenging "the MAN" along the way. Watch him kick, punch, slap and
pimp his way across the screen! |
|
|
|
|
 |
Get Shorty (1995)
There is a shot of a parked
Pantera right at the end of the movie. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)
There's a yellow Pantera
that gets stolen from in front of an office building when a woman gets
out of the car and leaves the keys in the ignition. The thief just gets
in and drives away. And, just before the big Eleanor chase, the lead guy
is walking through a warehouse of stolen cars, including 2 or 3 Panteras
plus a Mangusta. Nice showing. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
A yellow 1971 DeTomaso
Pantera is car number 15 on the list of "Ladies" and is known as Kate.
It's seen briefly in the background at the loading dock preparing to
pull into a container. |
|
|
|
|
 |
The Gumball Rally (1976)
There is one momentary
glimpse of a silver Pantera right at the beginning of the movie as the
characters are being introduced. Two CHP officers are seen blazing
through L.A. freeways in pursuit of a speeder, the silver Pantera, which
is going well over 100 mph passing cars left and right. On the
wide-screen version, the Pantera is visible, but on the
shrunk-to-fit-your-TV version, the Pantera is off-screen.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977)
Four Panteras appear throughout the movie. A black pre-L with a
horizontally striped rear decklid, a green pre-L with yellow stripes
atop the front fenders, a brown pre-L, and a red pre-L.
Does anybody know who owns these cars now
or who owned them at the time the movie was made? |
|
|
|
|
 |
The Honkers (1972)
James Coburn was the lead, and Anne Archer
played the daughter of a successful Indian businessman and drove a red
Pantera pushbutton. Stephen Lodge, the writer of the film who was also
on location at the time in a remote desert town, said he was under the
impression that the car was the second one imported (Even though the
film was released in 72, it would have been shot earlier). He also said
that Coburn left them up a creek when he damaged the transmission, but a
local mechanic was able to repair it. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Kill Bill, volume 2 (2003)
A DeTomaso Mangusta has a
cameo appearance in the background of a scene. The car is also featured
in the header graphics of one of the Kill Bill website pages. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Kill Squad (1981)
A silver Pantera GTS is
jumped in the movie. The scene was filmed on Bascom Avenue in San Jose,
California. Some PCNC members may recognize the location and some of the
local businesses of the time.
|
|
|
|
|
 |
The Love Machine (1971)
This was an adaptation of a
trashy novel by Jacqueline Susann about a TV news reporter. One of his
girlfriends drives a yellow Pantera (L or pre-L) which makes several
appearances. At the end of the movie the girlfriend drives off in the
Pantera leaving the reporter standing in the road. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Frank Challenge: Manhunter (1974) aka "The
Brass Ring"
(from Worth Keeter - Thanks!)
The yellow Pantera that was
in "Challenge" was also in a sequel called "Frank Challenge: Manhunter".
A criminal mastermind is screwing around with the political system. It's
up to special agent Frank Challenge, assigned to hunt him down! There
was actually a silly scene (cut from the film) where the Pantera has an
oil slick device that is used in a chase scene. When the car was sold,
the new owner drove proudly away with the oil slick pipes still sticking
out of the back of the car. |
|
|
|
|
 |
The Rookie (1990)
A "buddy cop" flick starring
Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen. In one scene they're poking around in
a bucks-up garage, grab a Mercedes SL500 and go launching out a
fourth-floor window or some such nonsense just seconds before the place
blows up. Just before leaving, as they're poking around the garage, they
happen to pass by a Porsche or Ferrari or whatever, and then walk past a
yellow Pantera. |

Classic DeTomaso Pantera - Top Gear
Click image to view the video on YouTube.
(07:25min)
Top Gear's "Supercar Snip" - Quentin Willson tells the audience about a
"bargain priced slingshot that's pretty enough to stop a speeding train,
has a top speed of 165 mph, racetrack bloodline, and spine-tingling
sound effects. A car with peerless handling that's mechanically
simple to maintain, all for the price of a 2nd-hand Granada."
What he fails to mention is
that shortly after getting behind the wheel at Silverstone, he abruptly
lifted off the gas in a corner and spun the car at into the wall high
speed, demolishing most if not all the corners of the car. The owner was
not amused. By all rights the car should have been totaled, but instead
it went to a restoration shop and was meticulously rebuilt, and the BBC
was handed a bill for £50,000, which was only about $75,000 at that
time, but at that time, $75,000 was all the money in the world for a
Pantera GT5. You could have bought a beautiful replacement for
considerably less. However, only nine original GT5 Panteras were ever
sold in the UK in right-hand-drive, and that made all the difference.
Mike Drew has since ridden in the car and said "you'd never know that it
ever had a scratch on it." Thanks for "the rest of the story"
Mike! |

Cadillac Escalade Commercial (November
2004)
A new yellow Mangusta is the
protagonist in a Cadillac Escalade commercial. You only see it for
moments at the beginning, then near the end when the light turns green,
it does a spectacular burnout across the intersection. The camera swings
around the back of the behemoth Escalade to reveal a police car whose
presence was blocked from view of the "Goose." |

Car Crazy Central (6/30/2004)
There's a glimpse of a red
Pantera parked in front of the SoCal Speed Shop as Pete Chapouris speaks
of his relationship with Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top and expresses his
admiration for his friend and mentor Alex Xydias, the original creator
of the So-Cal Speed Shop. The glimpse went by quick - about .5 seconds. |

CHiPs
One of the stock shots from
the TV series "CHiPs" (you know, the generic two or three second shots
they keep on file, and show between scenes to 'set the stage' and
transition between scenes) is a static camera placed in the center
divider in a freeway, filming on-coming traffic. A silver Pantera GTS
comes racing up in the fast lane and zooms past. |

|
 |
Coke Commercial with Pierce Brosnan (1987)
A British TV commercial for
Coke, in which actor Pierce Brosnan races a train to a railroad crossing
driving a red Pantera GT5. The car belongs to DeTomaso Drivers Club of
Britain president Phil Stebbings. The car got a lot of great exposure in
that piece. Brosnan was hired by Coca-Cola to appear in a successful
commercial for Diet Coke, which seemed to spoof the image of a dashing
secret agent. This began airing in the U.S. during the Super Bowl in
1987.

Expensive Rides - TLC (2/20/2005)
The commentators (from
Overhaulin) were in a showroom shared by a yellow pre-L and a red
Daytona Spider. Matt Stone had something to say about all the cars
featured, which did not include the Pantera or the Ferrari. The Pantera
is not Matt's. He had to sell his Pantera years ago, and his Longchamp
too. He's talked about getting another Pantera someday though.

Cars" (6/29/05)
Series hosted by wrestler
and movie personality Bill Goldberg with specific auto-related themes,
such as "Moonshine Cars," "Muscle Cars," "Cop Cars" and "Cars of World
War II." "Death Cars" was an episode which profiled vehicles that
took the lives of celebrities, including James Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder;
Jayne Mansfield's 1966 Buick Electra, cult comedian Sam Kinison's
Pontiac Trans-Am, and about 10-15 minutes on Vince Neil's Pantera and

Hanoi Rocks).

The segment was trying to

Movie "To Catch a Thief." The history detective visits the

a good shot of the Pantera, and a zoom of the bullet hole in the
steering wheel.

Matt LeBlanc Interview (2004)
Matt has a black 71 Pantera.
It's a nice car, but nothing super-special, although it has benefited
from a lot of work at Hall (redone seats, lowered floor pans, etc). Matt
says "My Pantera is like a woman... a bit finicky sometimes. It needs to
go to the beauty parlor for some fixing up, it requires a tender touch.
How much of a chauvinist do I sound like? I can't help it. I don't have
a girlfriend right now, but I have my Pantera." "Speed is sexy.
With some of the money I made from 'Friends,' I bought a 1971 Pantera
car, which goes more than 200mph. When I know I'm going to drive it I
get that same excited feeling as when I know I'm going to be with a
lover." -Matt LeBlanc |

Miami Vice
A beefed up 1972 DeTomaso
Pantera clad with salvaged Ferrari Testarossa body parts served as the
stunt double for the white Ferrari Testarossas used on the Miami Vice TV
series in the mid 80's. Although not recognizable as a Pantera, it
deserves honorable mention for doing the "real work" while the
delicate Ferrari's got all the glory. |

Motley Crue video - "If I Die Tomorrow"
from Richard
Plotkin's DeTomaso Forum post
"My work recently filmed
behind the scenes on the new Motley Crue video and guess what? There is
a yellow Pantera featured in part of it. The video for their new song
"If I die tomorrow" features vignettes from each member of the band and
their near death experiences. Vince Neil's is about how he crashed his
Pantera in the early eighties and killed his friend Razzle from the band
Hanoi Rocks. Vince's car was red, this one is yellow. So much for
accuracy. So, who loaned them their car?"

sweet 1971 Pantera, which was one of the first three to arrive in the
United States. See the car in the video trailer! John has owned the car
for a year and a half and says it's one serious driving machine! He then
took the time to show Dennis some of the improvements that he has made,
including custom paint with gold leaf trim, a high-rise Spider intake,
and 302 high performance heads to the original 351 Cleveland! After
hearing about it and seeing it, Dennis hitched a ride in the Pantera
until the first pit stop of the day. |

Rides - The Learning Channel (9/14/2005)
from a DeTomaso Forum post - thanks Jason!
A quick pan of the camera
showed a Pantera being welded on by one of the techs. It was missing its
top and half of the rear deck lid. The camera also panned a drawing of
what the car will look like when it's done. Next to it was another blue
and white stripped Pantera GT5. The car was being worked on by "Year
One" or by "Unique Performance," it wasn't clear. Looks like somebody
has ponied up the dough to build a totally custom topless Pantera! Who's
cars are these??? Give us the details, please.
That's Pat Holleran's
Pantera. He also owns the super-duper custom blue and white Pantera that
PI Motorsports helped screw together, and was featured in Pantera
International. He's having another one built, this one as a targa. I
think his first Pantera was the one you saw in the background, blue with
white stripes. |

High Octane 2
video from the
AutoSpeed website.
The video starts with Mr.
High Octane himself, Ketzal Sterling, firing up his trusty limited
edition DeTomaso Charade Turbo and tackles a dirt track short-cut to the
beach. A bit of handbrake use sees the little Charade sideways and
zipping along pretty well for a 1-litre 3-pot. |
