Former Aston Villa frontman Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Arsenal target Ruben Neves is no improvement over outgoing midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The Swiss midfielder joined the Gunners in the summer of 2016 from Bundesliga Borussia Mönchengladbach for £ 34million, a considerable sum given that N’golo Kante joined Chelsea for less than the same transfer window.
Xhaka has divided opinions within Arsenal’s fan base throughout his five seasons in the Emirates, after a stellar passing performance with costly high profile mistakes at the back.
Since the 28-year-old arrived in north London, the Gunners have failed to qualify for the Champions League, something they had achieved in each of the previous 20 years.
Xhaka’s time in England appears to be drawing to a close, with the combative midfielder set to join Jose Mourinho’s Roma side.
His impending departure saw Arsenal linked with Wolves midfielder anchor Ruben Neves, a signing that Agbonlahor said would be a side step for the Gunners.
“It just goes aside,” Agbonlahor said Football initiate.
“Xhaka and Neves are similar players to me. Both can score from howlers, both can score from free kicks but can’t really go around the field. They can’t really get the ball back.
“For me Neves is not the type of player Arsenal need and I think Arsenal fans would agree. Any Arsenal fan I talk to or see is devastated that Buendia has chosen Villa.
“They prefer the money spent on a threat of attack. Maybe they need to bring in someone stronger to play alongside Partey in midfield.
“Neves is not the kind of player they need.”
Neves will play a role in Portugal’s Euro 2020 campaign which kicks off against Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday.
