‘No man, worst day’, some Arsenal fans react as ex-player linked with return

Wojciech Szczesny has been tipped to make a shock return to the Emirates, according to reports in Mirror and some Arsenal fans have reacted with skepticism to this update.

The 31-year-old joined Juventus in 2017 for around £ 12.8million and has played 137 games, keeping 54 clean sheets (via transfermarkt) for the Italian side.

Bernd Leno has come under close scrutiny for his recent performances and the German is also said to be up for sale this summer. It could prove favorable for the former keeper to make a return to north London.

The Polish keeper has been a consistent player for the Bianconeri and is widely regarded as one of the best in Serie A. However, the Mirror says the Italian giants are considering a move for AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian is a free agent this summer but could demand hefty wages. In order to free up funds, Juventus are said to be ready to part ways with Szczesny. With the old lady of Turin eager to get rid of the Polish keeper, they are unlikely to ask for extravagant fees.

The report further claims that Arteta identified the goalkeeper position as one of the areas for strengthening and that signing the Polish goalkeeper would be an affordable way to do so.

Szczesny has repeatedly revealed that he misses the North London club. He told the Arsenal Nation podcast Last year:

I miss them [his former teammates]. I miss playing in the Emirates. I think it was something special for me, the quality of the pitch, the fans, the big nights in a North London derby.

Here’s how some fans reacted on Twitter:

View of the Arsenal fever

If Donnarumma signs for Juventus, Szczesny would likely lose his first place. The Polish goalkeeper would not be content with being demoted. We will therefore have to find a solution, and the return to his former club is one of them.

The former Arsenal shooter was not the most consistent player of his previous period in north London. He may have some convincing things to do to win Arsenal fans over again, but if the keeper manages to get his form back from Italy it will certainly help. He would also count as a local player after passing through Arsenal academy, which adds to his appeal.

Arsenal should be looking for a young goalkeeper rather than signing a 31-year-old. While Szczesny may be a good short-term fix for the Gunners, he doesn’t add value to the squad in the long term, unless the club plan to let go of Bernd Leno.
