Pompeo says US leadership has ‘left the scene’, suggests how to regain credibility with allies

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that in just a few months under President Biden, “American leadership has already left the scene” as the world watches the Taliban take control of Afghanistan, and suggested several ways for the United States to regain its credibility with its allies.

Pompeo told Maria Bartiromo, host of “Sunday Morning Futures”, that the Biden administration appears to have returned to the helm of the Obama era, leaving American adversaries such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watch “America destroy its alliances.”

TOP BIDEN HELPS JAKE SULLIVAN SAYS THEY STILL DON’T KNOW HOW MANY AMERICANS ARE IN AFGHANISTAN

“Looks like we’re back to Barack Obama, America apologizes, American weakness, and our opponents don’t fear us and our friends don’t trust us,” the former secretary of state said.

Biden heated up on Friday for asserting in a White House speech that he had seen “no questioning of our credibility from our allies around the world” regarding his handling of the Afghanistan, even though British lawmakers openly condemned Biden’s handling of Afghanistan’s collapse earlier than this week.

The Biden administration has been criticized as being caught off guard by the speed of the Taliban takeover and the chaos that followed the troop withdrawal, as thousands of Americans and Afghan allies remain stranded in the war-torn country.

But while Pompeo has said that the “debacle” of an exit from Afghanistan has done “enormous damage to American credibility,” he acknowledged that the reputation of the United States can be rebuilt.

Pompeo suggested America can show its strength globally by moving away from negotiations with Iran in Vienna, making defense deals with countries like Taiwan., and work closely with Ukraine to prevent Putin from seizing more of his territory like Russia did during the Obama administration.

With reports swirling around the Taliban assaulting Americans trying to get to the airport for evacuations from Kabul, Pompeo said the Biden administration must use force against the Taliban to keep American citizens safe.

“Make it very clear that you are not going to beg the Taliban, you are not going to plead, you are not going to plead. You are not going to pay the Taliban if the Americans are injured as they move towards the airport, ”says Pompeo. “You’re going to go crush them, impose real costs on them.”
