Sterling, Wirtz, Lang: all Arsenal-linked players ahead of January transfer window

Arsenal fans will be desperate to see any improvement over the Gunners’ ninth-place finish last season and if they can maintain the form displayed against Aston Villa on Friday they surely will.

The Gunners’ 2021/22 campaign so far has been mixed. Mikel Arteta’s men lost their first three games of the season without scoring a goal, but followed with three rebound wins, notably against Tottenham.

They now find themselves six games unbeaten in the top flight and, despite the big sums spent this summer, January could well be seen as a key time to gain an advantage over their competition for European places.

Here, football.london examines players who have previously been linked to the Gunners and whether they could make the move in the winter.

Dominique Calvert-Lewin

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette now in their 30s, Arsenal are looking to strengthen their striking options with the Everton shooter reportedly at the top of the list.

He’s currently healing an injury, but after scoring 25 goals in all competitions last season, it’s easy to see why the interest remains.

What is the probability of a move in January: It seems unlikely that Everton will be willing to sell mid-season, especially to a side like Arsenal who they might see as rivals for a European place, so it may have to wait until summer.

Ollie Watkins

Alongside Calvert-Lewin, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is seen as an option to lead the Gunners’ attack going forward.

He has a great record against Arsenal, so bringing him in could be a smart act of self-preservation if nothing else!

What is the probability of a move in January: Not beyond the realm of the possible. With Villa bringing in Danny Ings during the summer transfer window, this could make it more likely that they are willing to part ways with Watkins, although the move would still likely cost a pretty penny. Will the Gunners be ready to leave so soon?

Rahim sterling

The Daily Star reported in early October that Arsenal were considering a move for Raheem Sterling after his talks with Manchester City ended.

Still at just 26, if Arsenal were able to land the all-round striker it should be seen as a serious blow for the club.

What is the probability of a move in January: The fact that Arteta and Sterling have worked together before can only help when it comes to Arsenal trying to land the England star. But still, it looks like a move of this size would be saved for the summer rather than rushed into January.

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz has had a fantastic start to the 2021/22 season in Germany, scoring four goals and assisting six more in eight Bundesliga appearances.

Still just 18 years old, it’s no surprise the attacking midfielder has garnered so much attention and the Gunners have joined Chelsea and Bayern Munich in search of his signing.

What is the probability of a move in January: Without wanting to take Arsenal down, if Chelsea and Bayern Munich (the reported favorites) are also interested, the chances of him moving to Emirates Stadium are growing considerably. That’s not to say Arsenal shouldn’t try and there’s no chance, but making the move in January successful would be a huge surprise.

Youssef En-Nesyri

The center-forward has been in top form for Sevilla this season, scoring three goals in six La Liga appearances.

En-Nesyri is another name related to the Gunners as a potential heir to the gripping throne.

What is the probability of a move in January: All of this may depend on Arteta and Edu’s eagerness to recruit a new attacker. If they are desperate then a move could happen, with En-Nesyri posing perhaps the more realistic option.

Noa Lang

Club Brugge first loaned Noa Lang to Ajax before making the move permanent last summer and the left-winger has steadily strengthened in Belgium.

He has three goals and five assists in 13 league appearances this season and was first called up to the Netherlands senior squad in October.

What is the probability of a move in January: Having only signed definitively for Brugge in the summer, it would likely take a big bid to get him away from the club in January. This one may require the long game.
