School choice advocates joked that they were pleasantly surprised that Weingarten suddenly took up their cause, focusing on the word “chooses.” Weingarten strongly criticized the expansion of charter schools and compared school elective programs to segregation.

RANDI WEINGARTEN TASTED AFTER TELLING MSNBC “WE WILL TRY” TO REOPEN SCHOOLS AFTER CDC MASK GUIDANCE
Weingarten was the target of many frustrated parents last year as the ATF appeared to continue pushing back targets for reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was even discovered that the union had influenced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to delay start-to-school dates relative to transmission rates in the community.
The CDC was prepared to allow education in the school regardless of transmission rates. But after corresponding with the unions, the guidelines were adjusted to include a provision that read: “In cases of high community transmission of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, a further update of these guidelines may be necessary. . “
Many of the same critics scoffed when Weingarten claimed in May that his union had been pushing for children to return to class for just a month after the initial outbreak of the pandemic.
“We have tried to reopen the schools safely since April 2020…” Weingarten wrote in response to an anonymous Twitter user.
